Our Approach To Teaching Pickleball

Learning a new sport can be daunting and enough to put many people off. Because of the nature of pickleball, and the fact the majority of players are beginners, everyone is in the same boat. You will swing and miss the ball many times over and so will everyone else and when you do miss shots that is when the laughter begins. This we can guarantee.

At Gold Coast North Pickleball we will teach you how to play pickleball in a supportive environment. We are very patient teachers!

We segregate our new beginners and experienced players, until our beginners have developed enough skills to play with more experienced players. We nurture our beginners and build their confidence.

Founder’s Story

Let us introduce ourselves… Gayle and Colin Wilson

From the first time we picked up a paddle back in mid 2019 and hit that yellow ball we both were hooked. For years we were looking for ‘something’ on the Gold Coast. We wanted to be active and meet people and it needed to be low cost. Tough call when we

wanted to play pickleball multiple times a week.

We found a community tennis court, gained a sponsor for our paddles and balls being Halycon Greens Pimpama and started Gold Coast North Pickleball. Numbers increased so we forked out ourselves and bought three nets so triple the amount of people could play with us. We now own tweleve nets!

Gayle became an International Federation of Pickleball World Ambassador  (the first international one) where her role is to introduce pickleball to as many people as possible. Both Gayle and Colin have introduced and taught over 600 people how to play pickleball (as at August 2024) many who had never heard of pickleball before. Some of these players have gone on to become committee members of local clubs, including the Pickleball Association of Queensland   (PAQ) and two have even been PAQ presidents.

Gayle has completed the Introductory Instructor Training Program from Pickleball Coaching International and has a developed a comprehensive learn to play pickleball program as well as a fun program called GIGGLE PICKLE™.

Gayle and Col have both entered tournaments winning medals. Gayle was fortunate to play with her daughter Abbey (The Pickleball Girl on social media) back in 2020 and win Gold at the Queensland championships. Abbey quickly progressed to become an advanced player and is now employed by USA pickleball company, Selkirk and an NPL drafted player for the 'Caterpillars' team, season 1. Gayle has partnered her son-in-law (Abbey's husband) and won bronze in 18+. She then played in the 60+ womens and won silver for the same tournament. Pickleball is like that. Skill over age.

Gayle and Col have played at many south east Queensland venues and been volunteers to help paint pickleball lines on courts. They have run their own tournaments, fun social sessions with sausage sizzles and even had live music. Both Gayle and Col were at the meeting for the formation of Pickleball Association of Queensland (PAQ) and Gayle then served on the very first PAQ committee.

As you can see, pickleball is their life!
